Homemade Chicken Bread Roll (easy 10 minute recipe)

Photos by Marie-Catherine Dubé

If you’re wondering what in the world a chicken bread roll is, prepare to be amazed! This versatile snack has juicy chicken breast as a creamy chicken filling, wrapped in a lightly fried bread roll.

For the filling, I added mayo and mustard, shredded chicken and a few spices. Once rolled, I used a simple egg wash on the bread and pan fried until crispy. These few steps made the most delicious and easy bread roll, ever.

Often, people deep fry their homemade chicken bread. I wanted to keep these a little healthier and lighter for my son, so chose to pan fry instead. And let’s be real, I didn’t feel like busting out the deep fryer and dealing with that whole situation.

Even over the stove, this amazing snack is crispy, comforting and delicious and if you’re a chicken bread first timer, they’re worth trying. Using pre-cooked chicken (hello grocery store rotisserie chicken) means your chicken bread roll is ready in less than 10 minutes.

👩‍🍳 How to Make a Chicken Bread Roll

  1. With a rolling pin, flatten out the slices of bread so they are extremely thin and easily foldable. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add cooked chicken, onions, bell peppers, garlic powder, mayonnaise, mustard, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine the ingredients together.
  3. Place a scoop of the chicken filling to one of the rolled-out slices of bread. Roll the bread over the filling, enclosing it completely, and using a toothpick to hold if needed. Repeat until all of the bread slices are filled.
  4. Set a large pan over medium-high heat with olive oil. Dip each roll with beaten egg then set on pan, making sure to leave some space between each roll.
  5. Cook each side for about 1 to 2 minutes or until the bread rolls are golden brown.
  6. Remove from the pan and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

🪄 Tips and Tricks

  • Buy rotisserie or use leftover shredded chicken.
  • For BLW and toddlers, cut the bell peppers and chicken very small.
  • Make sure you roll the bread very thin. This makes it easy to roll and will ensure it covers all the filling.

🗒 Substitutions

  • Add any veggies you love! Be sure to chop the veggies you choose very small. You don’t want large chunks in your bread roll.

🗒 Variations

  • To make a cheese bread roll: add mozzarella cheese, cream cheese, cheddar cheese or provolone prior to frying.
  • If you want the full crispy and crunchy experience, use a deep fryer.
  • To make these vegan: use tofu, add extra veggies and replace the mayo with a plant-based alternative.

👝 How to Store Leftovers

These are best eaten right away so they’re crispy.

Store leftover bread rolls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Always cook them prior to storing to prevent the bread from getting soggy.
